"Like William S. Burroughs on crack!" - Thomas F. Monteleone, New York Times bestselling author

The bacon storm is rolling in. We hear the grease and sugar beat against the roof and windows. The doughnut people are attacking. We press close together, forgetting for a moment that we hate each other.

In Die You Doughnut Bastards, amputees, lonely young people, and talking animals struggle for survival against the freakish whims of nature. A typewriter made of fetuses is the source of woe for an expecting couple. A girl with a glass jaw hides an otherworldly secret. A demonic loner goes to a birthday party in Hell. You'll encounter a killer in a marsupial mask, a prison for anorexics, haunted pancakes, and a songwriter with a cult following.

Surreal prose poems give way to personal accounts of alienation and modern love. Vegetarian narwhals are sold at the supermarket. And in a city that might be your own, zombie doughnuts are rising up. Kill yourself before they kill you. Or just kill yourself.

Featuring original illustrations in the style of Daniel Johnston, Die You Doughnut Bastards is the latest way to drown, brought to you by Wonderland Book Award-winning author Cameron Pierce.

If you don't know about Bizarro, then you don't know Cameron Pierce, and if you don't know Cameron Pierce, you don't know what real writing is. The Bizarro genre, I'll let you look for on your own; Cameron Pierce, though, I'll tell you about.
If you love wacky, insanity, nuts, and the doughnut apocalypse then Pierce is the writer for you. If you want thought provoking and challenging stories, you're in the right place with Pierce. His stories are the equivalent of post-modernism on speed. I won't ruin the experience for you, but when reading best to have a beer or two and some anti-psychotics on hand.

I'd flirted with Bizarro on and off ever since 2002, but it was this book that converted me to a full fledged resident of the Bizarro universe once and for all. Cameron flexes some serious literary muscles here, as the stories range from poignant (Mitchell Farnsworth, Lantern Jaw) to hopeless (Die You Doughnut Bastards, Death Card) to whimsical
(The Grown Family Destroyed, Blood Guineas).

The best comparison I can draw to Cameron's style for those who need to be sold on this one is the clown in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. "Turn your tears into jest. Laugh at the pain that poisons your heart!"

He also has the rare ability to bridge that sense of tragicomedy, to bring it to the hip, alternative crowd. With every new release at Lazy Fascist Press, he bridges the gap between serious, contemporary literature and the bastard genre of Bizarro. Yes, we can all co-exist. It is possible! We are better off with Cameron Pierce publishing!

I used to love doughnuts... until I read Die, You Doughnut Bastards. These sticky, sweet beasts are evil. Nothing is worse than having your toes turn into maple bars as you wade through the sugary grease of a baconic maelstrom.

If the universities ever had the gumption to offer courses in Bizarro 101, Die, You Doughnut Bastards would be required reading, if not the primer. This book is a baker's dozen full of doughnuts, doughnut holes, and a couple of Long Johns. I ate the entire collection in one sitting.

Much of the work is angry. You'll never look at a gouged eye socket the same way. But Pierce examines such a wide array of emotions through this oddball compilation, regardless. One tale that resonated with me the most was "Pedro Riviera... Goes to the Mall." This piece perfectly nailed the concept of false hope.

Pierce's poems are delightful, as they illustrate what poetry truly can be. I found those especially engaging and I found myself rereading them multiple times.

Die, You Doughnut Bastards is a great product, and if you have never read Bizarro, this is a solid start into the genre. Poetry, prose, flash and shorts, Pierce handles these formats with elegant wordsmithing. I also liked the interior illustrations which reminded me of those old-school Chicago Skin Graft comix. A wonderful package overall.
If we were to compare Bizarro authors to directors, many of them would be cult film directors. Jordan Krall is a combo of Quentin Tarantino and David Cronenberg, Carlton Mellick III is a triple play of Takishi Miike, Shinya Tsukamoto and Dario Argento, and the author of this book, Cameron Pierce, is most definitely Tim Burton. It is his unique blend of childlike innocence mixed with a dark, brooding sense of menace that Pierce most likely cribs most of his books from. From Nazi Rear Ends to Vampires, Pierce's books are tailor made for stop motion animation. With his latest, he not only proves he is the dark genius of the Bizarro genre, if you can call it that, but he is also one of the most important writers to ever come out of this movement.

Die You Doughnut Bastards is a collection of stories, flash fiction, and poems that provides a glimpse into the mind of this talented author. It is a world where anorexic warriors live in an odd prison, where doughnut zombies mingle with Martin from the Human Centipede 2, and where a famous author commits a heinous crime and a young boy finds a friend with a unique secret. It is a world you'll never want to leave and when you do you'll come out better than you expected.

There are many stories in there that range from sublimely silly(Disappear, Narwhals) to some that are haunting and powerful(Death Card, Lantern Jaws) to just out there. These stores showcase an author who is at the prime of his game. Pierce is able to craft stories that seem odd on the surface but the deeper you dig you find a heart and soul. Never has a book made me laugh, cry and smile at the same time. This is a book that shows not just what Bizarro is but what it can be and how a unique underground movement can have a heck of a lot more power than any standard mainstream novel on the New York Times best seller list.

This was a great book, truly one of the best of 2012 and among one of the must read books for those who want to check the Bizarro world out. I can't recommend this one enough.

So get comfy and grab your umbrellas. There is a bacon storm coming, and it's going to strike you in your heart!
